Disruption is the new normal

Is disruption the new “normal”? If it is the new paradigm, must we not significantly change our company cultures to reinforce lightening speed, flexibility and creativity as the means to survive the constant waves of disruption?

The last 20 years have brought us: the dot.com crash in 2000, 9/11 in 2001, SARS in 2003, the great recession in 2008, H1N1 in 2009, China tariffs in 2018-2019 and now in 2020 a financial crisis instigated by the coronavirus in addition to an oil price war; a major disruption on average every three years!

As Leaders how do we redesign our systems, processes and procedures to be able to quickly morph our companies based on future incoming shock waves? What type of learning-training do our team members need to recreate in a moments notice our modus operandi? How do we acquire the operational visibility to take decisions in hours and not weeks or months? How do we know that we have the right data and are analyzing it correctly to avoid indecisiveness and decision making stalemate? How do we do the right thing when it is uncomfortable to do so instead of when it feels right? How do we embrace the need for radical instantaneous transformation as the “new normal” in order to survive?
